Haven't blogged much lately. Like many it feels like I'm having to work a whole lot harder for the same results. I've shifted a few things and plan on putting a lot more effort into my food photography. Hope to be around more often.

Every year for the last 5 years I have smoked jalapenos to make chipotle and this year is the first year that I finally got it totally right. It takes two days and a lot of babysitting and is totally worth it!
Last year I started smoking paprika peppers for a mild version of smoked peppers. The peppers in the foreground of this image are paprikas.

ent on my first urbex Sunday morning, really, really early Sunday morning. Worth the early trip for this image.

This place was like an alternate universe. It was a modern industrial ghost town and I was exhausted from soaking in all the visuals.

If you haven't been, or even if you have, I have added this to an interactive panorama of the space. It's my first virtual urbex (or should I call it a virbex?). I'm hoping for more.

I used a camera last night that I haven't used since November and in it was a card with this gem on it. I didn't add texture or change the color, this is how it looked and I love the tone.

I grew up in St. Louis but moved here 6 years ago. I miss the city. I'm looking forward to exploring Detroit more but could really use a good tour guide.

This is my Senegal parrot, Rudy, and when I uncovered him this morning and opened the curtains he said "It's pretty outside."

If you do a search on lemon you will see a ton of images of lemons being dropped into water so I thought I'd do it a little differently and shoot it out of water. It was fun photographing it but I did make quite a mess in my bathroom.

Arbor Brewing Company

My husband and I spend a great deal of time gardening and preserving our harvest for the many meals we make ourselves. Most of what we eat is cooked at home but a few times a month we go out to eat and we usually end up at Arbor Brewing Company, in downtown Ann Arbor. We go for the beer and darts but always end up with a meal that never disappoints us. In my opinion they have some of the best vegetarian options in all of Ann Arbor. But I think the consistently good experience we get at ABC is due to the people that work there. They top the list!

This is Spook, my cat, and he will watch out the window for a while and then turn to me and give me the most pathetic meow cry as if to say "make it stop!"

To get this image I had to blast the inside with my speedlites and set my camera to a very high dof and very low shutter speed. God bless Spook for being such a good and patient model!

We grow a lot of tomatoes and over the years I have become very fond of the green tomato top. I really want a tomato top tattoo but my husband thinks it will look too much like a spider. I still may take the chance.

We have a wild rose bush growing next to our porch. I pass it on my way to the garage and then again on my way back to the house each day, sometimes multiple times a day. It catches my eye every time I pass it.

This is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the winter. The sand and snow mix along the shore to create such a beautiful pattern.

I am not a mother but I am an Aunt, three times, soon to be four, and I love it! This is one reason why, Lula. She was a flower girl in my brother's wedding over the weekend and she made an adorable flower girl.

By the way, she thinks being an Aunt has something to do with actual ants.

I'm posting this in honor of my father whose favorite holiday was halloween. Every year until I was 18 we carved pumpkins together. They were all night projects carving crazy detailed pumpkins.

This photo was taken in college for my senior project of mixed lighting. It was taken with a Pentex K1000 inherited from my father. I'm posting as a thank you to my dad who gave me both an appreciation for the carved pumpkin and a love for photography.

It's official, I will be co-owning a small gallery in downtown Dexter, Michigan starting in November. I will also have a space in the gallery to display my work. This will be the first time I have shown in a gallery and although I think I'm ready I am a bit nervous.

I made this poster in honor of the town I chose to live in. If you've ever driven into Dexter from D19 before you enter the town you drive under this old beautiful railroad bridge and right before the bridge you get a glimpse of downtown Dexter, and it's a lovely first view of the old buildings. This poster is made up of the windows in downtown Dexter.

My official opening is November 21.

In Michigan we had one Indian summer day. It was on Wednesday and it was beautiful. We spent the day kayaking down the Huron river with my panoramic equipment and although the sun was not out much it came out in this particular spot at just the right moment. This is a 360-degree panoramic image taken in the water. And yes, the water was very cold!

99 red jalapeno peppers

Every year our biggest crop is jalapeno peppers because we absolutely love them. We end up making most of them into jalapeno poppers. Yesterday we picked 99 super hot, giant red peppers with lots of veins.

My house is very close to the main field in my small town of Dexter Michigan where all the high school football games take place in the fall. I love to listen to the sounds of the game from my back porch. Last night was the homecoming game and despite Dexter High School's lost the Tecumseh it was a fine night for a game.

Despite the cold summer our garden is doing very well. This harvest became enchilada sauce, spaghetti sauce, Gazpacho soup, and got roasted, grilled, stuffed, chopped, blanched and frozen.

We harvested about a a bushel of onions this year. To cure them we laid them out on a hammock in the garage. This worked very well as you can see.

Since photographing digitally have next to nothing in my portfolio that is b&w. Every time I converted anything to b&w it looked dull and muddy. I went to a photography workshop where the photographer said he always desaturated his images to convert them to b&w. I tried it and I was still not impressed. I loved the old b&w images with their bright whites, deep blacks and rich mid-tones. That's what I want but have had trouble getting it so I did some searching and tried a bunch of different methods from various blogs and tutorials and I think I've found a method I like. It uses the channel mixer in PhotoShop. I found it on the digital photography school website.

The image above is the final image using the channel mixer method. Below is three images that have been converted to b&w in different ways, desaturating, converting to grayscale and the channel mixer method. Nothing else was done to the images. Although the web isn't the best place to see the true results I think the mixer method is fantastic, so don't be surprised if you see more b&w photos in the future!
